This school has a lot of problems. Some major montessori principles are ignored. Staff turnover is a big problem, this year there are at least five teachers from the now two not three locations that are not returning. I find the administration to be unreliable and unprofessional. The staff seem miserable. My children couldn't understand why so many of their friends were not returning and now my children will not be returning either. The enrollment at the Gordon Avenue location is extemely low with only a couple of boys in the Kindergarten group vs. the 10 or more of previous years.
We've had our daughter in their Children's House for two years and now in the summer "camp" program. We couldn't be happier with our daughter's experience as she learns math, reading, writing, science and nature as well as the importance of courtesy and practical life skills. It might be nice if the board published the minutes of board meetings online, but it isn't hard for parents to take part and get involved. I've had several interactions with Wendy, the head of school, and she seems to be doing a fine job despite having to deal with some bitter personal attacks from a former board member.
This school only pays lip service to Montessori principles. They have all the materials and the classrooms look great but they have don't understand the philosophy: it's really day care dressed up as Montessori. The fundamental problem is with the administration who don't communicate well and do not embody the grace and courtesy and profound respect for the individual that is at the core of the Montessori philosophy.
We love the Montessori School of Charlottesville. The teachers are wonderful (4 staff members have been with the school for over 20 years) and the community is very supportive. I can see why the other reviewer cited frustrations with the admin--sometimes communication isn't what it could be--but if you are plugged in and involved, you would never feel that way. There are plenty of opportunities for participation. The teachers are all AMI certified and the Montessori philosophy is evident in all areas of the school. We've been here 5 years and plan to be here at least 6 more! All the campuses (Gordon Ave, Cutler Lane, JABA) have something unique that makes them worth looking into before you make a school decision.
i spent two years here before pulling my kids. The teachers are mostly terrific, but the administration is a disaster, and, unless you have an amazing teacher, they will make it very difficult for you to feel good about sending your child there every day. They won't tell you anything - good or bad, and they won't encourage any participation from you. Also, the school is Montessori mostly for decoration - there are many Montessori principles that aren't at work here. I'm thrilled that we left!
