Child's Play has been a great experience for our family. Our son is making friends and enjoying the play-based learning environment and high adult to child ratio -- minimum 1/5 in the preschool class. Active parent involvement is part of the school's charter so there are always two parents on duty with the preschool classroom in which our son is enrolled. In addition, one parent per child is required to serve on committees which range from fund raising to building maintenance. This keeps costs down -- currently well under $3k/year for three half-days per week -- but it is a LOT of work. I can't imagine a single, working parent doing it all without a ton of help from family. As with any school, we have felt the need to advocate for our son from time to time -- just to be certain that his needs are being met as effectively as possible. This may not be the right situation for a child with more behavioral issues or special needs. Our son is average in that respect. There is also very little in the way of a traditional three "R"s curriculum. Still, it's a good, nurturing environment and we are quite happy with our choice.
This is a cooperative school, with toddler, nursery, preschool, and kindergarten classes. Parents are required to volunteer in the classroom and hold a 'job'. There is a very strong community feeling that develops because of this. The teachers are outstanding! They show genuine care for each child, and end up teaching parents the meaning of the word patience! The classrooms are beautiful, and the very creative children's work is proudly displayed. The classes go on interesting field trips, eat healthy food, and learn to coexist peacefully. Both of my boys went there and have formed lasting friendships. I can't recommend this school highly enough.
Child's Play in Providence, RI is truly an exceptional school. The teachers are very skilled and dedicated. It's a cooperative so all the parents have to participate and they really care about their children's experience. Our boys are dissapointed that they can't go every day. Excellent school for the youngest children. Comfy! Cozy! Family atmosphere. Parents welcome to stay (in fact, even required, once per month). Small classes. Experienced, professional staff. Owned by parents (it's a cooperative). Governed by parents at monthly meetings. At the earliest stages (ages 2-3), the emphasis is on developing proper social skills and interactions. The school is very gentle on the kids and pleasurable. My daughter went since she was 2, and enjoyed every day of it. We have not seen anything better for the youngest kids around Providence yet.
