Did not know what to expect being that this was our first experience with preschool AND we didn't have any friends with kids in the city (SF). We are now at the close of our first year and I am so thrilled that we came to LHNS. The kids, parents and staff are all amazing and it really is an amazing community. While i expected my child to get a lot out of the experience - which he has - I had no idea how much i would get out of it - personal growth, friendship and great times. Happy to say we will be here for two more years.
I spent two years at Laurel Hill Nursery School as a child, and happily, my son is at Laurel Hill, too! The value of play-based learning is priceless, as the teachers rigorously support the children in their imaginative, sensory, and physical play. Parents are supported, too, by a deeply caring and engaged community. We are so happy to be second generation members of the Laurel Hill Community.
I am a parent of a girl in her first year at LHNS and a boy who spent 3 years there, including the PreK program. Amazing school, great facility, great teachers, well run and organized work days for parents. Great value IF you can do a weekly work day. I've learned so much about parenting from working with other children, parents and the teachers there. Very low turnover of teachers and staff. Very dedicated staff. Incredible location as the school is built on the side of the hill leading to great views and amazing array of outdoor space.
My daughter attends Laurel Hill school and it has been such a blessing. This is the most dedicated group of parents and staff I have ever experienced. My daughter has social challenges and the school has been amazing in helping us through this difficult time. There is a wonderful amount of support, through the parents, and the staff. It is a huge commitment, but the return is worth every minute you put into it. The school fosters a wonderful independence for each child to learn and grow. I have met friends I hope to have for years to come, and learned so much about children and parenting, it is much more than a pre-school. As many parents say , I would consider having more kids just to stay at LH.
Our daughter is in her second year at Laurel Hill and she loves it. She asks every day if it's a school day, and then pouts a bit when it's not. She gets to play and play and play all day there, all the while she's learning: learning how to play with others, learning how to read other people's emotions, learning how to self-regulate, learning how to communicate when there's conflict. The teachers are warm and loving to the kids. The play yard is wonderful: There are multiple levels of play area, water and sand play, tons of toys, a zipline, a boat, and teachers who come up with fantastic projects for the kids. There is a big garden, a play kitchen, an area for riding bikes and hammocks to swing on. Kids come home filthy because they had a blast climbing, digging, building, destroying, drawing, painting, gluing, running, jumping, or dancing. There are music and art classes once a week each, plus tons of art mixed in every day.
We were at a "drop off" school before coming to this co-op. Switching to a school built around community involvement changed our lives dramatically for the better. The amount of work we put in to the co-op comes back to us 10 fold in the form of supportive parents, excellent teachers and a truly gifted director. The play-based curriculum allows children to approach the learning they're ready for, in the way they are ready to learn it, and is good for both girls and boys of preschool or pre-k age. The facilities are full of opportunities for exploration. Kids get dirty here, and they learn through being allowed to take appropriate risks with adult supervision. I highly recommend this school for anyone ready to join an engaged community.
Outstanding parent involvement. The school does a great job easing children into a social environment. The child driven play philosophy was perfect for that stage in my son's development. The teachers are constantly providing different stimulation through projects and activities. The school has a strong sense of community and offers various educational seminars.
