The perfect balance: I have several children who attended and they each flourished. Abingdon is not a glorified babysitting service disguised as a preschool nor is it an over-the-top academic pressure cooker. In our experience, it was just the right balance of play and learning. The mixed-aged classroom was especially important as the littlest students (2-1/2 & 3) learn from the older students (4's and 5's). The older students pride themselves on leading by example and helping the younger ones. Montessori principals are practiced; however, instead of students chosing their 'work' the teachers direct students to ensure a daily balance of activites that utilize gross & fine motor skills; phonics & reading activities; counting & mathematics. Parental involvement is minimal on a daily basis, but there are PLENTY of opportunities for parents to meet with staff, observe classrooms or interact. Plenty! The school director is a no-nonsense and direct.

Based on the experiences my son had, I would not recommend this school. It is far too rigid and does not allow kids to be kids. In addition, the school is designed so as to minimize parental involvement, which is a shame.

No... thank goodness. Not everything in life is a lesson. Relaxation is an art that should be practiced more. Sometimes its ok to just "play".

Each toy DOES teach something, but it is up to the adult to make it interesting by being encouraging and specific.
