The Community Rating is the school’s average rating from its community members (e.g., parents, students, and school staff). The highest possible rating is five stars; the lowest is one star.
My son loved the school and so did I. We were lucky to find a slot when we moved from NYC in May. He finished off his final month or so in the age 3 group at the JCC and continued for summer school, pre-K, and another summer. The teachers he had were amazing. As with any situation I had preferences as to style, but for the most part I found that they all listened to the children, their parents, their needs. On countless times I found myself in the director's office seeking assistance and never felt let down (both with the prior director and the current director). If we have another child we'll likely return. As with the 12/11 rating - I too wish they had more Jewish teachers.
Its hard for me to read such a bitter parenst review from April 27, 2011. I have a child in preschool at the JCC and one who spent 3 years there. The director is a caring individual who has years of experience and cares about the program and every child in the ECE program. If there is an issue with a childs behavior, which is common with 2-4 years old, the director meets with the parents. Also, teachers do not tolerate bad behavior and will give the child consequences. I hardly think the word "bullying" is appropriate for this age group. Most teachers at the JCC have their teaching crdentials. My only wish is that more teachers were Jewish. I do understand it is not easy to find terachers especially Jewish. The JCC has a great program. I know from experience, the directors know best! They are sdeasoned at their jobs. There is a true void without the director present at this time. Parent from April - stop overeacting
Quality of teaching staff is mixed. Director of program is unsupportive and unprofessional. If your child gets a motivated teacher, consider yourself lucky. My child's PreK teacher lacked drive and her implementaion of the curriculum was poor when compared to her colleagues . The teacher, herself, failed to follow-through on things discussed during parent conferences. I brought valid concerns with backing evidence to the director, who was dismissive and unhelpful. My conversations with other parents revealed that they had similar problems with her. One apparently even threatened a lawsuit when the director refused to switch a student into a different class when he was being physically bullied by a child. This was a wasted year for my child and has a left a sour taste in my mouth. If you're an advocate for quality learning, it will be hard to deal with a director who doesn't care about the quality of her staff and is loathe to make changes. I refuse to enroll my other children here. On another note, this place serves unhealthy snacks, such as circus animal cookies with candy sprinkles and sugar-filled "fruit" juices.
My child and I love the Pre school program. There is structure, fun and a lot of support for the children and their families. Also they offer so many other programs for the children during the whole day and holiday weeks which works very well for working families. The JCC Community Center LB provides many programs and accomodations for the young( starting 3 months old), middle age and seniors. A must check out!
