Discovery School is a diamond in the rough. While there are many Day Care facilities using the word Preschool in thier description, Discovery School is the real deal. We were in the three's this year and our son progressed so much that it really blows us away. I really believe will all of my heart that the staff IS the school. Qualified and passionate teachers are all we ever want as parents and I don't doubt for a minute that Discovery School houses the best there is. Can't wait to start school.
We visited several schools before deciding on Discovery School and we were not disappointed. We did not want full time day care. We wanted something more than traditional Mothers Day Out . We wanted a PRESCHOOL. Through a direct, hands on learning approach; they teach academics through experiments and experiences with other people, objects, events, and ideas. We are both educators so we know it is a proven fact that active learning is the most effective way to teach a preschool child. So many out there are still using worksheets and teacher directed crafts. The teachers at Discovery School are more active during center time than the others we visited. Because the learning centers are also a teaching tool, they get down on the floor and use the moments during play to expand the experience. She has two teachers so they are able to split up for small group learning and they also have a large group activity each day. They go to a creative movement class every day and someone comes in to teach Spanish. This atmosphere not only providing for our daughter academically, she is socially confident and very self reliant. We will be so sad when she moves on to elementary school. Discovery School is very special place.
Discovery school teaches through play and uses the children's interests to guide them to learn. There are NO boring, symbolic worksheets, but there is plenty of learning. This is what I was taught to do when I received my degree in Early Childhood Education. I have a son that went through the Pre K program. The children did traditional academics in a child friendly way. My son was able to write daily, do small literacy groups, worked on science experiments and did math centers. The teachers covered all the subjects in their circle time, too. Discovery School manages to use developmentally appropriate methods to teach all these abstract concepts. I also have a son in the 2s class. I have a observed that they integrate more traditional academics like math, science, social studies and literature into their curriculum. They just recently finished a 6 week long color unit.
Great program and philosophy. This school understands that real learning comes from hands on experience and play, not memorizing the alphabet. Research proves children's brains aren't ready for academics until at least 5. Anything forced sooner is just rote memory and won't last. I'm proud to have my children somewhere that nourishes the whole child and is allowing my child to learn while having fun and exposes them to all subjects without pushing it or forcing it.
