Our son is in this third year at WCNS and has grown so much! He started at 2 years 10 months old, having spent most of his time home with me. The first few months he was very interested in what the other kids were doing, but didn't want to participate. He was very much a watcher, figuring out how the other kids interacted with each other. After the Christmas break he became more involved, articulate, and participated more in group play.
His second year he was still in the same class with the same teachers and thrived as a "big kid" knowing the ropes and helping out. He still liked to play by himself a lot, but was better able to invite kids that wanted to help to build a building next to his building. He also became better at stepping back from group play to go to the book corner when he was over stimulated.
This year the school has moved to a mixed age format so he is with children 2.9-5 years old in his group. He is very much enjoying being a mentor to the younger children. It has also provided an opportunity too see how much he has grown over the last two years. Behaviors that he had when he started, like not wanting to share toys or wait a turn, he is now very patient with in the younger children.
The teachers are wonderful and provide a range of craft, free play, and structured activities every day. The children play outside daily except in extreme bad weather. Early drop off and late pickup options are available and can be signed up for the day you need them.
My son is in his first year at WCNS, and I could not be happier. I was nervous about him going from one day a week of daycare to 5 mornings a week at school but he barely looks up when I leave in the mornings. As a teacher myself, I was very detailed in my search of preschools and looked at many in surrounding towns. In the end, I chose WCNS because of the warmth and creativity of the teachers, the truly play-based model (the kids have a lot of choice and spend an hour a day outside) and the co-op model. I am thrilled with the choice we made.
Watertown Cooperative Nursery School is a wonderful, nurturing preschool, with warm, compassionate staff. Thanks to the cooperative model, the parents are involved in their children's early childhood education. As a parent, I have found this approach tremendously helpful in many ways: it has given me the chance to get to know the staff, school and families of the other preschoolers in a way that other school settings would not have -- and above all, it has given me a unique insight into my child's budding personality. Highly recommended!
This has to be the best preschool in Watertown. The play based curriculum is excellent and the teachers really get to know the children and are really invested in their growth and development. There is a 5 day option with limited 3 and 4 day options. My daughter has grown so much since attending the school and has become very independent and made great friends. There is a very special parent community at the school which is very unique. You are asked to help out in the classroom once a month as well as being involved with fundraising events, enrollment and various other board positions. Highly recommend this school.
Our 3-year old is in the Purple room this year, and she is having a wonderful experience. She feels comfortable with and respects her teachers, she has made great friends, and she looks forward to school each day. As a parent, it has also been great. We really value the coop model, where parents take on important roles giving us unique opportunities to get to know the other families and help shape the direction and character of the school. Along with all of the other parents and children, we especially value the daily parent helper role in the classroom. The Purple Room curriculum is more play and experiential-based rather than academic, which what we wanted for our daughter at this point. The Yellow Room, which she will be in next year, adds in some educational elements, e.g. reading & writing. Of final note, it is true the parent responsibilities can be challenging at times, depending on what role you take. However, we find that aspect absolutely worthwhile.
WCNS is a fun, play-based preschool. It is a 5 morning program with extended day options to 1p or 3.15p The teachers are warm and caring and the parents are very involved through 'parent helping' in the classroom once a month and volunteering in various committees. The children spend at least an hour outside each day and have lots of time to run around. We have sent our oldest two children there and will send the baby when he is old enough. Really great school!
