The greatest strength of this school lies in: a) its long-standing faculty b) its Director c) its supportive parent body, and d) **incredible** facility This school's approach and foundation to learning are both reminiscent of a bygone, cherished era, while also present and proactive to the challenges which face pre-school education in our nation today. It is truly a unique place of hands-on learning, whose cornerstone at all times, is the children. There are many ways parents can become involved, from limited to more intense involvement, but at all points along the way you feel welcomed and at home. There is also a tremendous outdoors influence at NSNS which is unmatched in our area by other local pre-schools. As a result, the children at this school thrive because they are out in the dirt, in the dirt, and constantly learning about what comes from the dirt. The school has the reputation for being more expensive than others, but when you consider the low student-teacher ratio in conjunction with the high quality of their program, I can attest that your child receives an exceptional return on your investment. There is no better preschool on Boston's North Shore.
Our child is now in her second year and her experience has been wonderful. When we visited the school grounds for the first time we fell in love with the forest-like setting and their incorporation of nature into the curriculum. As other posters have noted they routinely have play time outdoors in nearly all weather conditions (monsoons and sub-20 degree days excluded). We had hoped that our child's first school experience would set her up for future success and enjoyment of learning and our expectations have been exceeded!
Both of my children went through North Shore Nursery School and are now in first and third grade. The school provided a fun, nurturing, creative environment and the necessary academic foundation for elementary school. The teacher to student ratio enables the staff to truly get to know your child's strengths and needs. North Shore Nursery School is not just a school but a community, that fosters friendships and learning for children and their parents. It is an amazing first school experience that we will all remember forever.
Our third and final daughter is in her 2nd year @ the School and once again we love it. The director, teachers and staff are the best of any I ve seen. Over half of them have been there 11 years and longer which speaks to the attachment they feel to not only the School but the students and the educational philosophy. A terrific physical facility designed w/ toddlers and little children in mind provides a great shell in which to execute the superior program that focuses on; early childhood education, an unmatched student-teacher ratio, experiential & discovery based approaches to learning, and an enrichment program focused on music, culture and the environment. All of our daughters have loved every minute of being a student @ NSNS. Our oldest two love to go back and play on the playground and see their old teachers, and our youngest wishes she could go every day(!!). The foundation that has been laid for our children in terms of their approach to school and eagerness to learn in a classroom is directly attributable to their experience @ NSNS. It s a fantastic little School and it s almost 50 years old! Check it out, you will not be disappointed.
My daughter is in her last year of pre-school and we will be very sad to leave NSNS! The Director and teachers put a tremendous amount of thought and time into planning the curriculum and getting to know each child and family very well. The facility is an amazing place both in and outdoors. The natural setting provides many opportunities for science explorations, such as weekly hikes in the Older Class. The school offers a lot of cultural enrichment such as spanish, music and movement, and special performances throughout the school year. It is wonderful as a parent to know that my child is in such a nurturing and engaging pre-school environment.
One of the reasons we decided to leave another preschool for NSNS was the incredible outdoor classroom/playground. To know that my children would be able to learn in such an environment was important to me. The teachers are caring, warm and knowledgable. They often gave me advice that I applied to my novice parenting skills. The school community is welcoming and I still have close friends from when my children went to school there.
NSNS is a gem of a pre-school. The low student : teacher ratio coupled with the quality of the teaching staff make for such a special first school experience. The innovative programming, the facility and playground -- all terrific. Best of all, its a wonderful community to be a part of.
We love NSNS. It has been the best first school for my daughter. The teachers are incredibly dedicated. NSNS also serves as a great source of information on early childhood development. I couldn't imagine being anywhere else.
Outstanding innovative teachers, excellent enrichment and outdoor exploration, fabulous facility with indoor sandbox and play structure, very low student-teacher ratio. Wonderful foundation for learning!
